Hank Azaria to Retire Voicing Apu on ‘The Simpsons’

/Film reports that Azaria and The Simpsons team have agreed that he should no longer voice long time Simpsons character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. Here’s what he had to say in a question posed following his Brockmire panel:

“We all made the decision together,” Azaria said. “We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.”

Azaria indicated there was no resistance to phasing him out as the voice. One wonders why the show couldn’t just share that news earlier.

There was always controversy around the fact that Azaria was voicing an Indian character on the show. However, things started to intensify after Hari Kondabolu‘s 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu.

It seems that after years of debate and a few failed attempts by some to make the issue go away it’s been decided that Apu should no longer be voiced by Azaria.

It hasn’t been announced yet whether this means the character will be retired of if a new voice actor will take on the role.

Here is what Azria said on the subject back in 2018
