Barack Obama randomly shows up at the Children’s National hospital with gifts!

Former President Barack Obama just randomly showed up at the Children’s National hospital in Northwest Washington on Wednesday wearing a Santa hat. And, he brought gifts. He handed out jigsaw puzzles, Hot Wheel sets, remote-controlled cars, glittery nail polish, and other goodies. The kids staying at the hospital were overjoyed by his visit, as was the hospital staff.

Very few people at the hospital knew he was coming, so it was a shock to almost everyone. Obama stayed for more than an hour an a half visiting with most of the people there, being careful not to miss anyone.

“I know they will be talking about it for years to come,” said Kurt Newman, chief executive and president of Children’s National Health System. “At such a busy time of year, when no one wants to be in the hospital, his natural warmth lifted the spirits of those kids, their parents and of each staff member he met along the way.” When Obama finally gave his heartfelt farewell speech to the group, it brought tears to many of those who were fortunate enough to have listened:

“I just want to say, thank you to all of you guys. This wasn’t just a chance to talk to some of the kids and their wonderful families at a time when its tough for a lot of folks. As the dad of two girls, I can only imagine in that situation, to have nurses, and staff and people who are caring for them, and just looking out for them and caring for them and holding their hand, that’s the most important thing there is. What a great reminder of what the holiday spirit is supposed to be all about.”
